Wind energy is a form of renewable energy that is generated by harnessing the kinetic energy of the wind through wind turbines. This energy is derived from the movement of air masses on the Earth's surface, primarily caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun. Wind energy is converted into electricity through the use of wind turbines.
Wind was the second largest renewable energy source worldwide (after hydropower) for power generation. Wind power produced more than 6 percent of global electricity in 2020 with 743 GW of global capacity (707.4 GW is onshore).
